Excellent run today
Mar. 24th, 2024 07:58 pmI set out to do 4 hill reps, and I did 4 hill reps. My plan is to lower my hill rep ambitions in the short term, since I haven't yet hacked the mental aspect of doing a bunch all at once.
I'm planning to do a lower number (aiming for 4) during the next few days, when the high will be about 5C, and then do some longer low-intensity "keep warm" runs. Then when the weather warms up a bit, my plan is to do a small batch of hill reps, take a breather in the cemetery, and then another small batch. 2 batches of 4 reps seems more likely to happen than 1 batch of 8, and obviously better than 1 batch of 4. Maybe working up that way will help build my stamina, instead of repeatedly losing the "But I don't want to do this!" "Yes you do!" "That is a lie!" "It's only a lie for 30 seconds per loop, and then it gets better!" "Lies, damnable lies, and statistics!" argument.
But I think if I'm slightly less uncomfortable walking and sitting down in the cemetery, I'll be more likely to linger for a breather and then convince myself I have enough willpower left to start another batch of hill reps.
I have above-average cold tolerance, and I mind being uncomfortably cold less than most people, but it does take a certain amount of willpower to remind myself of that and get and stay in that frame of mind. And it takes another certain amount of willpower to start running up a hill knowing what's coming. (The curse of knowing what's coming; most of the loop would be A+ if I didn't spend the whole time trying to convince myself not to wimp out on the next loop because of that 30 seconds at the top.)
Anyway! I did my 4 loops, then I got super hungry for some reason, so I headed home. By the time I got home, I wasn't especially hungry, but I made myself eat something anyway, and I headed back out. Walked 2.5 miles with the express intention of getting uncomfortably cold, then turned around and ran back. I actually ran the whole 2.5 miles! I did stop for a few minutes halfway to pick up something at the grocery store, but I was super annoyed that I had to and almost didn't. Only the fact that I have 4 spread-out meetings tomorrow and thus no time for errands made me stop running and go in the store.
Oh, and for my 2.5 mile run, I set a more sustainable pace than my usual pace, because I wanted to be able to get up that hill. (Lately I've been doing about 3/4 of it if I've done cemetery hill reps before it.) I kept wanting to go faster, but I made myself wait until I had both cleared the hill and recovered, and then I pulled into a slighty faster run. Still slow! But more natural-feeling.
That was better than my yesterday run! (3 reps, and then ran most but not all of 2 miles.) Granted, I took a longer breather between hill reps and distance run, but honestly I was just having a better running day. When I got home after the second run, I was actually laughing out loud from sheer euphoria. Like, literally this stuff is a drug, it does drug-like things to your brain. (At least if you're lucky enough.)
Wish me luck making time to run tomorrow evening after all those meetings.
